Menopause is the end of a womens menstral cycle. Menopause typically occurs when a women is the her 40’s-50’s, when the production of their reproductive hormones naturally decline.
What are some common symptoms and complications of menopause?
Common symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Irregular periods
- Hot flashes
- Mood changes
- Trouble sleeping
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Painful intercourse
- Reduced sex drive
- Vaginal dryness
- Osteoporosis
What can we do to combat these symptoms?
- Hormone therapy- Hormone therapy (HRT) is used to replace the estrogen your body stops producing during menopause. HRT is used to treat common menopausal symptoms and to help prevent bone loss and reduce bone fractures.
- Vaginal estrogen- Vaginal estrogen can be administered via tablet, cream or ring form. This form of estrogen is used primarily to relieve vaginal symptoms of menopause such as dryness, itching, discomfort during intercourse, and burning.
- Low-dose antidepressants- Antidepressants can be used to help relieve symptoms relating to mood disorders and may also decrease the presence of hot flashes.
- Vitamin Supplements- Menopausal and post menopausal woman are at an increased risk for vitamins deficiency. Vitamins can be used to help decrease symptoms like fatigue, depression, and improve overall bone and memory support.
